Danny Williams did us all proud on Saturday with his valiant and courageous display. He seized the Commonwealth heavyweight title and dealt Audley Harrison his first professional defeat at London's Excel Arena.
Danny Williams decked the Olympic super-heavyweight champion in the 10th round and went on to claim a split decision. After nine rounds of mauling, the contest sprang to life when Audley Harrison suffered the first knockdown of his career from a lunging right hook. In the final round both exhausted fighters traded clean blows After a vicious war of words which culminated culminated in Williams refusing to share a pressconfer - encestage with Harrison in the buildup. Audley Harrison hugged Danny Williams back into his own corner and before the first bell had already endured his first serious ticking off from busy referee Dave Parris. Danny Williams' more aggressive stance was clearly winning over the fans, promoter Frank Warren grew increasingly frustrated with Harrison's tactics. But the contest sprang to life midway round 10 when Williams landed a cracking right hook to drop Harrison on the canvas for the first time in his career. After the fight Danny Williams began by saying Alhamdulillah (All praise to Allah), I was granted victory to silence Audley Harrisson. Brother Danny has made us Muslims proud and the sports team at Islamic Times wishes him and his family every success in his future endeavors InshAllah. |
