Olymplic torch will shine for Darfur PDF Print E-mail

As the Olympic flame passes through London on its way to Beijing, it will be used both by protestors against China's position on the genocide in Darfur and by organisers of London's 2012 Games, to raise awareness of their cause.

The torch, which is built to withstand the worst excesses of weather, has become the focus of a protest movement that saw Steven Spielberg resign from his role as artistic director of the Games in China.

Protestors who claim that China's inaction over Darfur is contributing to the problems have threatened to stage protests along the 85,000 mile route the torch will take through 20 cities worldwide.

The journey, set to take 130 days, will see the flame pass through London in the first week of April.

While protestors vie to use the symbolic moment to highlight the plight of the Sudanese region, organisers of the capital's own Olympics are eager to use the opportunity to publicise the 2012 sports showcase.
