Santos secured a remarkable fifth tournament victory in eight years against an unlucky Canaries FC in the Royal Piri Piri supported Abdul Charity Cup Final.

Player of the tournament Mohammed Bapu scored a hotly disputed penalty in the opening minutes to see off their Preston based rivals Canaries FC, 1-0. Canaries FC overcame a host of tricky ties on their way to the final, conceding only the solitary goal in the final.

Goalkeeper of the tournament Ibrahim Nakhuda was largely responsible for Santos’ success, saving three penalties in the shootouts both in the quarter and semifinals, as well as producing a string of saves in the final. Canaries overcame Bolton Asians 1-0 in the semi-finals, whilst Santos overcame OBC on penalties.

charityCupThe tournament played at the Preston Sports Arena attracted teams from all over the region as well as some from beyond and again displayed free-flowing and skilful football. The charity tournament has raised thousands of pounds for good causes over the last eight years and has firmly become an established annual event.

The tournament was marred by serious injuries to Faisal Mohammed (Bolton Asians) and John Pilkington (FC Waterloo). The organisers wish speedy recoveries to both.

Many thanks also to Royal Piri Piri, KW Foods, Shuaib Khan and all the volunteers and referees for their help and support on the day.
