Dear Editor,
I have just returned from Pakistan recently after assisting a charity with aid relief in Kashmir.
When I arrived in Islamabad, I picked up a copy of the local newspaper to read whilst waiting at the airport. To my surprise and shock, I saw the most unusual newspaper ad. The Pakistani government has placed ads in several Urdu newspapers, with the large yellow radiation symbol and a warning to report any lost or misplaced radio active nuclear isotopes! Apparently, these ads will also soon appear in regional and English-language papers in the UK.
I have been keeping up–to–date with this story since my return and have been informed that although the Pakistani government has said that the isotopes are not missing, they are trying to warn people about old radioactive medical equipment which was buried around the country before the country was founded half a century ago, and which have recently started resurfacing due to bulding works. Potentially harmful, this is just a warning to anyone planning to visit Pakistan this summer for their holidays. But one question I do have, is, how on earth will the Pakistani people know whether they have stumbled across some stray isotopes?
