Dear Editor I was recently reading an article in one of the mainstream broadsheet newspapers about the new women MPs from Hamas and their concerns. I am not a Muslim but I was a bit concerned at the attitude of this Hamas MP who basically said that she was ticking off a list of wrongs done to women in the name of religion such as forced marriage, honour killings, low pay and girls being kept out of school etc. My issue is not with this woman addressing these issues, but at the same time she said that she was preparing her 13-year-old son to die in the fight against Israel when the need arose! Isn’t this double standards and do Muslims agree with this stance?
Mr McCann (Edinburgh) Editor: The issue of women in Islam and polictics is a very complex issue and one which we hope to address in the near future, in particular with the developments in Palestine. Please keep an eye out for this in future editions.
