Campaigners open new fronts against Israel PDF Print E-mail

Not a week goes by without some new protest against Israel. February saw actions against Carmel-Agrexco the Israeli owned agricultural product importer, later this month pro-Palestinian campaigners will be lobbying the London headquarters of the Football Association, regarding the forthcoming England/ Israel match. Every week Marks and Spencer’s stores are picketed up and down the country, because of the high street stores sale of Israeli products, and promotion of trade with Israel.

Although Carmel-Agrexco’s West London depot has been physically blockaded, leading to the arrest of some protestors, in the past the Court have questioned the legality of Carmel-Agrexco’s operation. The sale of products grown on expropriated Palestinian land is contrary to international law. This doubt has led the company to drop any legal action.

Many activists are angry Israel is allowed to take part in the Euro 2008 football competition, but restricts the movement of the Palestinian national team preventing it from competing internationally. There will be picketing of the FA’s headquarters at Soho Square in London’s West End from 1pm on March 24th

Across the world Trades Unions, faith organisations and political parties are urging their affiliates to boycott and disinvest from Israel and their governments to put sanctions on the regime. Opposition by trades unionists to the rail company Connex training Israeli tram drivers in Dublin, world famous film director Ken loach refusing to go to the Haifa film festival, and prominent academics such as the biochemist Steven Rose calling for a boycott of Israeli Universities and academics, has given further credibility to the three pronged boycott, disinvest and sanctions [BDS] strategy.
