Leaders of the 27-member European Union welcomed Friday the Mecca agreement on the formation of a Palestinian national unity government.

The EU leaders in a statement after the end of their 2-day spring summit expressed their appreciation for the role of Saudi Arabia and Arab leaders in bringing about Palestinian reconciliation.

"The EU stands ready to work with a legitimate Palestinian government that adopts a platform reflecting the Quartet principles," said the statement.

The Quartet (EU, Russia, UN and the US) wants the PA national unity government to recognize Israel, give up armed struggle and accept all past agreements between the PLO and Israel.

The EU leaders expressed their determination to "reinforce Lebanon's sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence".

The statement reaffirmed the EU's commitment to the establishment of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon to punish those behind the killing of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and urged all members of the international community to lend their support.

The statement commended all constructive international mediation efforts, "in particular those of the SG of the Arab League and Saudi Arabia, aiming at a solution to the current political crisis in the country ( Lebanon)".
