In the current media onslaught of Islamophobia, the Salford University Islamic Society had taken the lead in tackling these issues using a positive forum. They chose to present Islam awareness week in a creative and equally unique style. This included a vibrant array of speakers outlining their reasons of embracing Islam and an exhibition centred on addressing misinformation about Islam which also included an Islamic art exhibition.

The theme of their week was 'WHY Islam?' The speakers included Ahmed Thomson, a prominent human rights barrister and prolific writer of many books including Dajjal, Blood on the Cross and Jesus prophet of Islam. Yvonne Ridley was who is currently presenting the Agenda on the Islam Channel, and vocal anti-war human rights campaigner was also amongst the speakers and finally an ex model who worked in the same circles as Naomi Campbell, who later reverted to Islam.

The exhibition sought also to explode the myths surrounding Islam and provide clear and concise reasons why belief in Islam is not equivalent to terrorism and that being an 'Islamic fundamentalist' means you believe in human rights, tolerance, and peace. The exhibition was put together by Peace artist Fauzia Khan, and included basic information on Islam, Women in Islam, the intellectual contributions of scholars from all fields to modern day academia and a vibrant display of original Islamic art and calligraphy. Members of the Islamic society were on hand throughout the day to give tours around the exhibition to people who were visiting. The most eye-catching part of the exhibition was the display of Islamic art and artefacts.

These included Qurans from around the world with meanings translated into different languages and a brief mention of well known western artists such as Tiffany, Escher and William Morris who were heavily influenced by and all of whom studied Islamic art. Sister Yvonne said, ''This was one of the most successful Islamic Awareness Weeks I have attended and I was delighted to see so many non Muslims come to the event and hopefully they will have been inspired to find out more about our great faith, and help dispel the myths that our enemies spread.
