Meet Khalid Sharif, our very own Muslim Willy Wonka, sitting on top of a mountain of Ummah bars shouting the question "Isn't it time your chocolate did more then just taste good?"
Ummah Foods is based on a 'community business model' that is in line with the spirit of Islam where those in trade are required to look after their community.
At every stage from production to distribution the Ummah team aim to take actions that will please Allah (SWT) and help the local community.
The wrappers are designed by up and coming young British artists with a view to give them exposure and to act as role models to Muslim children who want to enter the creative fields.
Any marketing muscle they have is used to promote causes such as the Muslim Youth Helpline, who they are working with. In addition, for every product sold 10% of the profits would go to charities and community projects including educational projects and homeless charities.
It took me a while to find them hidden away in World Foods in Tesco but it was worth it! Chocolate enthusiasts will appreciate the Ummah Chocolate bars delivering the perfect balance of intense, slow melting, milk chocolate and rich ingredients.
The Ummah Caramel with a soft centre of premium caramel enrobed in milk chocolate and the Ummah Orange crème simply delicious.
So, why do we need Halal chocolates? Something much needed, if you are anything like me, checking food labels to firstly establish if it is suitable for vegetarians, and secondly trying to decode ingredients and numbers that could indeed contain alcohol.
With more food awareness, Muslims now realise that even if an ingredient was acceptable by vegetarian standards it may well have come into contact with something that is certainly not. A perfectly vegetarian ingredient may have been extracted/processed/ filtered using animal fats or alcohol.
Ummah Foods make sure this is not the case by making sure that not only are the ingredients Halal to the strictest Standards of Islamic law but the factory cleaning process and the glue in the wrapper also do not contain any alcohol or animal products.
The food industry is now starting to wake up to the opportunities of the catering needs of growing Muslim populations worldwide. We need labels and brands that we can trust and Ummah Foods is providing that. Supermarkets are now acknowledging the Halal pound and "Muslim purchasing power" due to small businesses like Ummah Foods who have brought to their attention how important and particular Muslim dietary requirements are.
The trial at Tesco and Asda will determine whether Ummah bars will achieve the vision they set out to fulfil – to reach the one billion Muslim consumers globally with its products with the hope of helping and supporting Muslim and non-Muslim need across the World – Insha'Allah. So what are we waiting for!
