Rochdale Town Hall played host for a first of its kind exhibition in the region on 30th September entitled ‘A thousand miles in one day - an interactive day with Islam’.
The exhibition aimed to raise cultural awareness and enhance community cohesion within the wider non-Muslim community of Rochdale through interaction with Muslims.
The event was a huge success, attracting around 600 visitors, young and old from all backgrounds. Visitors came from Rochdale, Middleton and there was even a couple from Wales.
The day was a journey of knowledge and interaction with Islam delivering a variety of fun, interesting and informative stalls. There was an amazing timeline which displayed an eye-opening history of Islam in Britain going back to the 6th century and detailing the contributions that Muslims have made since.Converts to Islam were at hand to give an account of their life and an insight into their experiences of how they came to Islam.
The ‘Foods of the World’ buffet was a particular favourite where participants enjoyed a variety of dishes from all over the globe whilst learning about Muslims who live in that region.
Muslim Women had the chance to give their own view on the often misunderstood topic of a woman’s role in Islam. This ranged from their participation in society to the clothes that they wear in public.Visitors also were given the opportunity to try on the Hijaab and felt for themselves what it is like to dress as a Muslim Woman.
Art enthusiasts marvelled at a display of local talent with an exhibit of Islamic art and calligraphy.
The response from the public was fantastic with many people asking for more information or requesting for the exhibition to be turned into a road-show.
A local community leader stated "Muslims have lived in and have been a part of Rochdale for decades. The more understanding we have between communities and cultures, the less opportunity there is for misunderstanding and conflict.”
The event was a beautiful example of how Muslim organisations in Rochdale united to jointly manage and organise the project from beginning to end.
The various groups included educational organisations such as Lote Tree and the Light of Islam Academy as well as UK Islamic Mission, Rochdale Dawah Centre and Youth Connections.
Shamim Ali the chief organiser said “The day was just amazing and it was beautiful to see people coming together, eager to interact with Muslims and learn more about Islam. I would really like to thank everyone, in particular our non- Muslims guests, for taking the time to attend the exhibition and showing a genuine interest. I sincerely hope that through this event, and initiatives like this, we can promote mutual understanding and bring all the different communities closer together.”
