A DELEGATION of five British Muslims, including Member of Parliament Sadiq Khan, went on a two-day visit to Singapore to share their experiences about the British Muslims.
The visit was facilitated by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore and they travelled to look at the Singapore model of how Muslims can live in peace and harmony in a secular environment.
Among those they met during their visit were politicians and students, with whom they discussed a range of issues including the role of Muslims and Islam in the UK.
The delegation hoped to encourage the exchange of ideas between British Muslims and other Muslims around the world, and be the voice of mainstream British Muslims. The delegation met with Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Zainul Abidin Rasheed on their arrival and they were also called on the Environment and Water Resources Minister Dr Yaacob Ibrahim.
Upon his return to the UK, Mr Sadiq Khan, MP for Tooting told Islamic Times: "The trip was very useful in the communties of our two countries exchanging ideas and experiences as Minority Muslims. It was clear to us that Singapore is a good example of how issues around Identity and Citizenship have neen reasonably succesfully dealt with. Just as importantly, the Singaporians were keen to hear about the British Muslim experience in politics, sports, medicine, policy work, community engagement. This is the first of what I hope will be a fruitful relationship between our two countries."
