Muslims integrating into British society and trying to balance their responsibilities of being British with their responsibilities as a Muslim.
Wudu Mate is a product invented by a Muslim for Muslims that addresses the problem of performing ablution (wudu) when using public toilets, which is a necessity before performing any obligatory prayers. Wudu Mate overcomes this, as it is a portable, flexible, compact container that is made for washing with water when using public toilets when no other facilities are available.
Moazzam Naqvi, the inventor of Wudu Mate is a British born Muslim. Moazzam graduated in Computer Science and went on to work for a large telecommunications organisation. Moazzam said “I often struggled at work at prayer time, not because there weren’t any facilities to pray, but because it was awkward when I had to perform my ablution. Like most Muslims I would fumble along and make use of what I had, such as cups and water bottles to wash myself in the toilet. It was embarrassing when colleagues would wonder why I was walking into the toilets with a water bottle. As a professional I wanted to portray a professional image, but not at the cost of my faith. Therefore I looked for something that would help me reconcile the two most important areas of my life and to my amazement I found nothing. This is when I started to play around with the idea myself and eventually after two years of brainstorming, research and manufacturing Wudu Mate was created”.
Although Wudu Mate may be seen as a tiny step towards solving one of the smaller problems that Muslims face, nonetheless it is still significant. Moazzam sees Wudu Mate as an example of what Muslims can achieve if they think outside the box and stop excepting things for what they are by coming up with positive solutions.
Invention is not an alien concept to Islam, if you look back into Islamic history some of the most powerful breakthroughs that have shaped our modern world have been invented by Muslims.
Wudu Mate is being sold in bookshops from Glasgow to London, online sales have also been booming. On top of that the product has been sold worldwide including Holland, France, Canada, Australia and also the U.S.
